This course introduces students to visual art and architecture from prehistory to the medieval era with a focus on art from Europe, North Africa, and the near East. The course will further consider global interactions involving these regions. You'll discover how art shaped civilizations-and how civilizations shaped art! Explore artworks from ancient caves to soaring cathedrals, marvel at the Great Pyramids of Egypt, encounter mythological gods and goddesses, powerful rulers, and uncover the dazzling beauty of illuminated manuscripts, brilliant mosaics, and awe-inspiring stained glass. Along the way, you'll build critical thinking skills, cultural literacy, and a lifelong appreciation for art's role in shaping the world. No previous experience needed-just curiosity and imagination! Survey of Art from the Renaissance to Contemporary  3 UNITS

This course provides an overview of art and architecture from the Renaissance to the contemporary period with a focus on art from Europe. The course will further consider global interactions involving this region. You'll embark on your own Grand Tour through the history of Western art! From the innovative frescoes of Giotto and Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel to the salons of 19th-century Paris, from the grandeur of Versailles to the daring brushstrokes of the Impressionists, this course explores the masterpieces of painting, sculpture, and architecture that have defined-and defied-the norms of their times. Along the way, you'll meet radical artists, witness revolutions in art and society, and discover how images shaped-and were shaped by-their cultural moment. Build your visual literacy and critical thinking skills as you journey through six centuries of artistic innovation. No passport required-just curiosity and an open mind! Formerly ART 141.
