Queer Studies Certificate of Achievement
The Queer Studies Certificate of Achievement is constituted by three courses. The first is PSY-134: Human Sexuality, in which students acquire scientific knowledge about the wide array of sexual orientations and gender identities beyond the static and dominant binary account. This course provides the objective basis for the next course, which is PHIL-123: Queer Philosophy, in which students will critically examine the theories underpinning our views of gender and sexuality, including liberatory ones, such as Judith Butler’s. Students will also explore relevant metaphysical, ethical, and epistemological claims, with an emphasis on human flourishing. The final course is GEND-117: Introduction to LGBT Studies, an interdisciplinary course that introduces the student to a broad range of contemporary and historical LGBTQIA+ issues, including sociological, political, racial, and sexual ones. Queer activism and popular representations are also discussed. The Queer Studies COA is ideal to gain knowledge about LGBTQIA+ communities, persons, and lived experiences. This certificate facilitates cultural awareness and inclusion of LGBTQIA+ issues. Since nearly ten percent of our population identifies as LGBTQIA+, this certificate is invaluable in understanding ourselves and all our communities, and facilitates effective membership and leadership within them.
